    A whopping 163 young sailors descended on Lake Taupo for the Optimist North Island Championships November 16-18 in extremely challenging weather conditions. A wide range of wind strengths and cold temperatures did not get in the way of completing a full programme of twelve races.

    It was great to see all 14 entered boats make the start line. Only Marilyn (sunburn) and Farrago II (mast damage) didn’t quite make it. Congratulations to Team Vodafone Sailing who set a new multihull race record. They beat their own record that they set in 2010 by just 3 minutes and 2 seconds. They completed the race in 27 hours 11 minutes and 58 seconds. Brilliant effort!

  • Sir Peter Blake’s Legacy lives on at Torbay Regatta

    The Sir Peter Blake Regatta at Torbay Sailing Club pays tribute to the legacy of a great New Zealander on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd of December this year. Held off Waiake Beach, Torbay since 2002, this regatta has grown to be a major event on the small boat sailing calendar and around 400 sailors are expected to participate in the 2012 edition this coming weekend.

    Olympic Gold Medal sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie presented a Yachting New Zealand Service Award to Heretaunga Boating Club sailor John Greenfield last Saturday during a Wellington visit. John Greenfield, still an active sailor, has been Treasurer at Heretaunga Boating Club for over 30 years, a Learn to Sail instructor for eight years and is still using his engineering expertise to supervise and undertake building work and maintenance at the club.

    Orbit Corporate Travel Sailor of the Year for 2012 has been awarded to Olympic golden girls Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie, while their coach, Nathan Handley has been named 2012 Singapore Airlines Coach/Official of the Year. These and other Awards were presented at yachting’s annual celebration, the 2012 Yachting Excellence Awards where a crowd of around 300 packed out the waterfront venue at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron tonight (Friday evening).
  • JP Tobin sails back after windsurfing reinstated

    JP Tobin will dust off his RS:X board and eye another Olympic campaign, with the windsurfing class reinstated at the expense of kiteboard racing for Rio 2016. Six months of lobbying by the international windsurfing community yesterday paid off, with the controversial decision in May by the International Sailing Federation to drop windsurfing in favour of kiteboard racing - a call that stunned the sailing world given the latter was untested - reversed at the International Sailing Federation's annual meeting in Dublin, Ireland.

    It was not so much a spectacle as an historic encounter as the two AC72 catamarans met on the water. It was the first AC72 race – practice or otherwise – to take place. The south-westerly breeze never got above 12 knots and the yachts had no chance of stretching their legs and providing the spectacle America’s Cup fans had expected.
