Saturday November 10th brought perfect sailing conditions to Lake Rotorua for Sailability Rotorua's 'try sailing' open day at the Rotorua Yacht Club. Fourteen new sailors took to the water, helped by the club's more seasoned sailors of all ages and ability.
The event took part alongside an open day for the Adaptive Rowing programme, and the Rotorua Yacht Club's thriving windsurfing programme... all three sports may see the retun of these keen individuals! The try sailing event was attended by a group of ten visually impaired , and four families from Rotorua.
It was particularly pleasing for the event organizers that they didn't need to accompany the new sailors, many could do it on their own, or with the help from the existing members of Sailability Rotorua!
Rotorua Yacht Club is starting to see an increase in membership due to these new activities both with Sailability Rotorua and the Windsurfing programme. Collectively, they will soon start the recruitment process to hire a coach to cater for the growing demand of learn to sail and racing programmes.
Sailability Rotorua sails regularly on Sundays in Rotorua. If you or somebody you know are interested in giving it a go, contact Don McGowan.
