A whopping 163 young sailors descended on Lake Taupo for the Optimist North Island Championships November 16-18 in extremely challenging weather conditions. A wide range of wind strengths and cold temperatures did not get in the way of completing a full programme of twelve races.
The open fleet had 119 sailors from across 14 NZ Clubs and 5 Australian Clubs. Nick Egnot- Johnson from Murrays Bay Sailing Club sailed consistently in the 12 race event, finishing first overal and just 6 points ahead of his club mate Leonard Takahshi-Fry in second place. Alec Brodie (Middle Harbour/RPAYC Australia) sailed solidly into third. Karensa Jennings also from Murrays Bay Sailing Club was the first girl, finishing 10th overall.
Green fleet presented 44 sailors over 11 clubs with 2 from Australia. Conditions challenged Green Fleet sailors limiting their series to 5 races. Torbay Sailing Club sailor Reece Caufield finished 1st (points count back) followed closely by David Robinson and Campbell Stanton.
NZIODA wishes to thank the Taupo Yacht Club and all those that volunteered to help run this great event.
