    Winning the Gold Fleet and the NZ Starling Championship was Trent Rippey, George Gautry 2nd, Leonard Takahashi-Fry 3rd. Lola Stoodley 4th and 'First Girl'. The Silver was won by Ben Warren, Tauranga, Taylor Balogh, Naval Point 2nd and Carmen Haybittle, Murrays Bay, 3rd. The Development Fleet was won by Logan Beckman , Murrays Bay, Finn Pritchard, Paremata, 2nd, Perry Scott, Otago Yacht Club 3rd, Bertie Ruscoe, Naval Point 4th.
  • ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres: Gold for Maloney and Meech, Bronze for Junior

    Alex Maloney and Molly Meech from New Zealand have won gold at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres in the 49erFX class securing the victory today after six days of racing off the French coast. And Josh Junior has taken his first podium finish at a World Cup Regatta with bronze in the Finn.

    New Zealand’s 49erFX pair Alex Maloney and Molly Meech has stormed into the lead with one day to run at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres on now in France. Kiwi sailors will also feature in the medal races in the Finn, 49er, Laser and Men’s 470 events with Finn sailor Josh Junior the next best placed of the team and in with a shot at a podium finish. Conditions were challenging, the official report describing; “Tricky conditions have been evident throughout the week and the fifth day of racing was no different. An early morning easterly breeze faded as the day progressed.”

    As day four of racing at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres wraps up Alex Maloney and Molly Meech (pictured), lying 2nd in the 49erFX are almost neck and neck with the leaders, while Josh Junior has inched into 3rd in the Finn. Elsewhere the remainder of the kiwi team produced some mixed results. By the end of racing tomorrow sailors must be placed top ten in their fleet, (top eight for the 49erFX and 49er) to qualify for the medal races on Saturday.

    Day three at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres brought champagne sailing with nice waves, sun and good easterly breezes returning some excellent results from most of the New Zealand contingent. Four kiwi teams remain in the top five of their fleet, with a further four placed within the top ten as they head into day four of the six day regatta (and day two of finals).

  • Taupo to host 29 teams for National Secondary Schools Team Racing

    This year the Lake Taupo Yacht Club will host the Secondary School Team Racing Nationals, one of the larger sailing events of the year and also one of the larger secondary school sporting events in general. Twenty nine teams will be competing for the honours of best New Zealand secondary school, as well as the right to represent New Zealand at the Inter Dominions ANZAC Teams Sailing Regatta in Brisbane.

A weather forecast that promised breeze this late in the season for the South Island, vital ingredients for a successful 2013 Starling National Championships. 108 boats in the Open fleet sailing on the Queen Charlotte Sound outside Picton Harbour, just a handful of 'Development' Fleet boats on the inner Harbour, plenty of enthusiastic sailors, supporters, coaches and officials.

  • AMP Access 303’s find new home in Whanganui

    In mid April, the NZ Access Class Association’s two 303’s (available with thanks to AMP) moved to their new home – at the lake ‘outpost’ of the Wanganui Sailing Club. With support from the Class Association, Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, Sailability Taranaki Volunteers and YNZ Staff, there is now the potential for one more club to become accessible next season.
  • Emirates Team New Zealand update - Final day at Naples

    Racing at the Americas Cup World Series event in Naples wrapped up today with what organisers call “Super Sunday” - a final fleet race that is worth triple points. That sets the scene for what is essentially a winner-takes-all last fleet race. Emirates Team New Zealand’s winning streak from yesterday did not continue and the team had to settle for 6th place, finishing the fleet racing championship third overall, behind Luna Rossa Swordfish and Oracle Team USA.

  • Bay of Plenty flooding - public health advice

    There was extensive surface flooding across the coastal Bay of Plenty over the weekend. “We can assume that all flood water is potentially contaminated with farm run-off, faecal matter from feral and domestic animals, and, in some cases, sewage,” says Medical Officer of Health, Dr Phil Shoemack. There are potential health risks associated with contaminated flood water and the Medical Officer of Health has provided the following advice to help prevent illness in the community.

    Helena Horswell gives us her insight from the 2013 Access Class Asia Pacific Championships: I had been told that last time a kiwi contingent went to an Access Class event here, there was a huge problem with weed in the lake, but apart from the rather murky colour, the only issue this time was the low level, causing berthing issues at the dock for Libertys and Skuds.

    A tough contingent of Australians will meet a brilliant but lone majority New Zealand crew for the ANZAC long weekend running of stage two of the TP52 Southern Cross Cup at Sandringham Yacht Club, April 26-28. Australian and New Zealand comrades will be honoured this coming ANZAC Day for fighting side-by-side, a tradition which began on the bloody shores of Gallipoli during WWI. In keeping with the modern day rivalry between the two great sporting nations eight TP52s will square off on the waters of Port Phillip in Victoria the following day to begin the quest for the series’ perpetual trophy.

    Racing at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres is underway with day one of the six day regatta now drawing to a close in Hyeres, France. A solid team of kiwi campaigners are competing including 14 entries across six events including the Laser, Finn, 49er, 49erFX, Men’s 470 and Nacra17. Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox have opened with an almost faultless performance in the Men’s 470 class to top the 63 strong fleet after day one of qualifying, sailed in light winds off Hyeres.

    Bucklands Beach Yacht Club has put out a call for yachties from all Auckland area clubs to head down to their waters to race in the PIC Insurance Winter Series 2013. The naming rights sponsor PIC Insurance is putting on a massive load of prizes, and they have discounted the entry fees to attract 'out of club' boats to take part.

    The second day of racing in the America’s Cup World Series in Naples started with a bang, literally, for Emirates Team New Zealand. In the first race of the day, a match race with Luna Rossa Swordfish, Dean Barker and his crew got off the start line with a penalty on Francesco Bruni allowing the New Zealand crew to round the first mark with a slim lead.

    We have been using the Yacht Bot trackers for training with the NZL Radial Worlds Sailors. The trackers fit easily around the mast and also onto the buoys. Using the trackers data has proved incredibly useful at giving us detailed information for our debrief’s. The focus of our training has been on lane holding and speed upwind, then angles and decision making downwind where huge distances can be gained and lost in the laser.

    The NZL Sailing Team is getting set for more action with the final regatta of the 2012-13 ISAF Sailing World Cup Series about to get underway in Hyeres, France. The kiwis will join over 800 of the world’s best Olympic and Paralympic sailors to do battle on the water next week. Racing at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres will take place on the ‘Rade de Hyeres’ starting on Monday 22nd April and running over six days with the medals decided on Saturday 27th April.

Touching down in Australia, USA, Spain and finally Hyères, France from 22-27 April the 2012-13 series has welcomed sailors campaigning for the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition to set an early marker at the beginning of a new quadrennial.
