RŪNĀ  Yachting New Zealand Schools Programme

Yachting New Zealand Schools Programme RŪNĀ

Yachting New Zealand have developed a new schools' programme called RŪNĀ, which encourages children to learn from the past so they can steer towards a more sustainable future.

It involves three modules:

  • Kōrinorino o Ngā Tupuna – Following in the wake of our ancestors (Social Studies and Local History - focuses on understanding local settlement stories).

  • Kōkōkaha – Harnessing the power of wind (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - focuses on designing sustainable energy solutions).

  • Moanamana – Building NZL’s Blue Belt (Science and Education for Sustainability - focuses on restoring marine ecosystems).

Each module is made up of in-classroom learning experiences delivered by teachers, supported by a sailing experience, and followed by a call for learners to take action. The modules are designed for students in years 5 through to 10 but can be easily adapted for older or younger children.

Learn more about RŪNĀ here.

We have two modules available across the country in 2022.

Kōkōkaha - Powered By Wind

Kōkōkaha learning experiences are designed for ākonga in years 5 through to 10 and focus on the science technology, engineering and maths involved in harnessing the power of the wind.

Kōkōkaha is available now for schools and kura across Aotearoa New Zealand.

Kōkōkaha includes classroom and sailing learning experiences

Classroom experiences include hands-on activities to help your students learn about the power of the wind. Sailing experiences include going sailing to feel the power of the wind and interacting with a set of resources to understand how sailing technologies work. Learners use the skills and knowledge they acquire to design a technology to harness the power of the wind. They will also get an introduction to safer boating practices and water skills for life.

The following video gives you an insight into what is involved in Kōkōkaha.

Kōrinorino - Our Ancestors' Wake

Kōrinorino focuses on the local history, science, technology and maths associated with settlement of Aotearoa New Zealand. Kōrinorino learning experiences are designed for ākonga in years 5 through to 10 and are intended to provide them with the skills and knowledge to understand the local history of settlement of their area.

Kōrinorino is available to schools and kura across Aotearoa New Zealand from term four in 2022.

Kōrinorino includes classroom and sailing learning experiences

Sailing experiences provide the opportunity for your students to get out on the water and experience what it would be like to be an ocean navigator. During the sailing experience your learners will get out on the water and be like an ocean explorer. They will also participate in a series of hands on activities to familiarise them with some of the technologies used in navigation. They will also get an introduction to safer boating practices and water skills for life.

Sailing Experience

There is also an opportunity for student to participate in a sailing experience, which complements the work they do in the classroom. See what it's all about in this video.

Register to get involved?

We need your school or kura to register so that we can send you the teacher guide, set you up to add designs and videos to the appropriate galleries and to put you in contact with a provider of sailing experiences. You can register for just one module or for both modules - it's over to you.

We need just one person to register for each school or kura. Click on the register button and you will be taken to the site. On the site there is a register menu where you can fill in your details. Once we receive your registration we will contact you directly to set the wheels in motion.

Register for RŪNĀ here

Yachting New Zealand will then be in contact to discuss local sailing experience opportunities for your students and will share with you the full set of classroom experiences, including instructions for setting up the hands-on activities.
