Scott Barnes (RNZYS) stole the lead from his previous first equal place holder Sam Gilmour (RFBYC) after 4 impressive wins today to take the top spot with 12 wins and only 1 loss at the completion of the Round Robin.
Second overall Gilmour added 2 more wins taking his total to 10 wins and 3 losses. One of Gilmour’s losses came at the hands of the all-female crew helmed by Claudia Pierce (KIYC); Pierce led the race until after the top mark rounding, jibing and sailing into a big hole which Gilmour sailed around. Pierce managed to salvage the lead to cross the line by just 1 second. This result boosts Pierce to 3rd equal and 4th on count back.
Gilmour’s only other loss of the day was to Adam Middleton (RPNYC). Middleton also has 9 wins placing him equal to Pierce, but third on count back as Middleton beat Pierce in Flight 16 by 1 minute 37 seconds. Middleton commented, “We were more confident with the increase in pressure from yesterday”. “The crew really stepped up and rose to the conditions; particularly with today’s tougher competition.”
Next overall in 5th place is Charlie Lalumiere (PYC) who added another 2 wins and 1 loss.
Malcolm Parker (RPAYC) had a hard afternoon on the water with 3 losses to top ranked Barnes, Hannah Osbourne (RNZYS) and George Anyon (BBYC), sliding him down the leader board to 6th spot overall. His win over fellow club mate Stephanie Doyle gives him the point he needed to take him one point clear ahead of the next four teams that are locked on 6 wins overall.
With only the top 8 teams going through to tomorrow’s quarter finals, the 4 skippers tied on 6 wins are Christophe Killian (BYC), Osbourne, Anyon and Will Holz (CYC). The four way tie is broken in favour of Killian who took wins over all the other three tied skippers.
Rounding off the top 8 a success story of the day is Osbourne and her all-female crew who were successful in winning their all their 3 races today. One of the races was a real nail biter against Richard Minielly (RVYC), with Osbourne taking the win by just 2 seconds. Osbourne commented “We had a much better day today; we knew we had to win the 3 races and I’m really happy with my team and looking forward to racing tomorrow”. Despite the loss and unable to secure a win throughout the series, Minielly commented that this race with Osbourne was his closest of the day and the best yet.
Narrowly missing out on the top 8 is Anyon, Holz and Nick Howe (RSYS), who was yesterday deducted half a point for the damage caused by catching his keel on the anchor chain of the RNZYS Committee Boat.
Hampus Appelgren (KSSS) had 2 wins from 2 losses today, bringing his total to 4 points and 12th place overall for the series.
The second RPAYC team helmed by Stephanie Doyle had 3 losses and 1 win today. When commenting about her day on the water and with a smile on her face, Doyle said “In my race against Barnes, I led in the pre-start and across the line, and then we sailed into a massive hole left by a cruise ship!”
Due to lack of wind this morning, racing was again delayed. The Race Committee and competitors headed down to the Mechanics Bay area, nearer the harbour entrance, in search of breeze. PRO Megan Kensington said “Once the sea breeze filled in we completed Flight 14, then the breeze died and did a 60 degree shift. It was great though to complete the Round Robin and we look forward to a great day tomorrow”.
Racing is scheduled to commence at 10am tomorrow with the top 8 teams into the Quarter Finals and Prizegiving is scheduled for approximately 4pm at the conclusion of racing.
