Young kiwis excel at Australian mid-winter Regatta

Issue date

A group of young kiwis have been lining up across the ditch at the 2013 OAMPS Insurance Brokers QLD Youth Week and two have come out on top of their fleets.

Young Timaru sailor Cullen Le Roy has won the Laser Radial division and Leonard Takahashi Fry from Murray’s Bay Sailing Club in Auckland has won the Optimist Open fleet at the regatta sailed at Brisbane’s Royal Queensland Yacht Club between 2nd and 6th July. Ali Nightingale from Canterbury's Charteris Bay Boating Club was 5th overall in the Laser Radial fleet and 2nd female in her division.

Le Roy, Nightingale and Takahashi Fry were part of a small group of kiwi youth sailors who are in Australia for the ‘mid-winter’ regatta which gathers over 280 young sailors.

“These are some of New Zealand’s up and coming youth sailors,” says Talent Development Manager Ian Neely. “It’s great to see them go so well against the Australian sailors and the experience will really benefit them as they progress with their sailing.”

1st Optimist Open - Leonard Takahashi Fry (Murrays Bay Sailing Club)
5th Optimist Open – Nick Egnot-Johnson (Murrays Bay Sailing Club)

Queensland Youth Week is proudly hosted by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron with support from both Yachting Queensland, Yachting Australia and of course OAMPS Insurance Brokers.

The regatta is held annually in July with organisers doing their best to ensure an even overlap with the Australian states’ school holidays. Competitors race on the beautiful waters of Waterloo Bay on the bayside suburb of Manly in Brisbane, Queensland.
