Enthusiasm from the south to bring the Yachting New Zealand National Race Officers’ Conference to the mainland resulted in a turnout of 24 attendees at the Naval Point Club Lyttelton on Saturday 10 September.
“It was a very productive day with all attendees engaged in open discussions chaired by National Race Committee Chairperson, Ian Clouston and with contributions by International Race Officer, John Parrish,” says Graeme Wall, Regional Support Officer.
The Conference covered various issues ranging from the new Rules that come into effect 2017, the reformatting of the Yachting New Zealand revalidation forms, the up-grading of Race Officer information on the Yachting New Zealand website and the creation of an easier on-line system to Race Management issues around the country – including the a brief fly-over discussion on the view from a drone.
Discussion was had on how to get more interaction between Race Officers from around the country and how they can get to other areas to assist in major regattas and gain experience for the benefit for the whole sport.
The day included a presentation by Vaugh Utteridge, from the Christchurch City Council on the survival of sports Clubs in Christchurch post-earthquake. This was very topical as all Clubs in the area have been affected to some extent by the earthquakes – with a few rebuilds underway.
“A good day, well hosted by the Naval Point Club – let’s see plenty of South Island Race Officers up North for the next Conference,” said Wall.
