Yachting New Zealand is offering its clubs a renewed opportunity to strengthen their commitment to sustainability through an enhanced Clean Club accreditation programme.
Clubs can now secure a three-year accreditation with annual check-ins to ensure continued adherence to environmental best practices.
For clubs nearing their certificate expiry, maintaining accreditation is a straightforward process.
"If you're looking to stay at your current accreditation level, it's as simple as reviewing your last Clean Club report to ensure you're still following best practices," said Alisa Torgersen, Yachting New Zealand's education lead.
"If you're aiming to upgrade to a higher star level, we’re happy to guide you through the next steps based on your previous report."
The programme also offers mentorship opportunities for clubs just starting their Clean Club journey.
"We have clubs eager to mentor others, so if you're unsure where to begin, we can easily connect you."
Meanwhile, Devonport Yacht Club recently achieved the prestigious three-star accreditation — the first club to be awarded this status for a three-year period.
Geoff Evans, Devonport Yacht Club's sustainability representative, also won the Clean Club survey prize earlier this year.
Across the country, Yachting New Zealand has seen steady progress in club sustainability. Over the past year, eight clubs earned their first star, three clubs upgraded to two stars, and five clubs achieved three-star accreditation.
Notable clubs to gain their certification over the last 12 months, include Waikawa Boating Club, Nelson Yacht Club, Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Clarks Beach Yacht Club, Manly Sailing Club, and Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club.
"Well done to all the clubs that have earned their stars this year. We're excited to continue supporting clubs on their sustainability journey," Torgersen said.
New sustainability leads are encouraged to contact their regional development managers (RDMs) or Torgersen directly at alisa@yachtingnz.org.nz.
Additionally, Yachting New Zealand has reached out to clubs with upcoming certification expiries or inactive registrations to ensure they remain on track.
