Westhaven Promenade construction starts; Information for Westhaven Marina users

Issue date

The construction of the Westhaven Promenade is underway and over the next ten months 600m of timber boardwalk and 900m of concrete path will be constructed from just east of Swashbucklers, to the Westhaven Drive/Curran St intersection.

The Promenade is a five metre boardwalk that will eventually connect Westhaven Marina with Tamaki Drive through the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct. Soon it will will be possible to walk or ride from the Harbour Bridge to St Heliers and enjoy our fantastic waterfront.

For boat owners and marina users there could be some disruption to marina use. However, this will be very minimal over the busy summer period.  Our aim is to minimize road and car park closures, if any, throughout the 10-month construction period.  The work program will accommodate special events and particularly busy periods (such as Wednesday and Friday night racing) occurring at Westhaven.

Construction has been divided into zones and the first area to get underway is the grassy hill behind the NZ Marine building at St Mary’s Bay where visitors can see the builder’s pegs in the ground now.

The promenade and cycleway will be constructed from sustainably sourced timber, utilise a zero-energy lighting solution, and the structural design accommodates future rises in sea level.
