The construction of the Westhaven Promenade reached a milestone with the commencement of piling this month, and fourteen piles are now installed.
The new footpath either side of Sails Restaurant will be ready to pour in the coming weeks, and the reconstruction of the new deck is also underway.
“Thank you to all of those who have been affected by the temporary changes to carparking, and one-way systems of Westhaven Drive,” says Waterfront Auckland’s General Manager of Marinas Tom Warren, “especially to those running businesses, and our marina users on K and L piers.”
At St Mary’s Bay, the second section of the footpath has been poured, and pedestrians are already using it.
Temporary judder bars have been installed as a measure to slow traffic on Westhaven Drive, for the protection of the many runners and dog walkers, and to encourage cyclists to ride in a single file.
“We realise the judder bars are uncomfortable, but we have asked through various forums for vehicles and cyclists to slow down, and it was not happening,” says Tom Warren.
The five metre wide Westhaven Promenade will eventually form part of a 20km continuous walkway and cycleway that runs from Herne Bay in the west, to Tamaki Drive in the east. The project is being designed to integrate with marina operations, and has the potential to bring a whole new group of potential boaties into the area.
