Mayor Wade-Brown said "It’s my great pleasure to welcome home the Wellington Spirit, a team that’s been enjoying success on foreign shores and putting Wellington’s sailing talent on the map."
"I congratulate the Wellington Spirit Sailing Team for their recent qualifying success in Perth and Spain a crucial step on the path toward the World Match Racing Tour and if we can have a Wellington team on the World Match Racing Tour, then there’s great potential for bringing that tour here!"
I also congratulate the coaches, families and Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club for their contributions.”
Wellington Spirit won the prestigious Warren Jones Invitational in Perth in January against the best under 25 Match racing talent in Australasia. Their victory in Perth qualified them for entry to the Spanish Open in which they finished in third place ahead of a list of teams which are card holders for the World Match Racing Tour.
The next step for the team is a series of regattas in the American Grand Slam tour in August. The team is still waiting for confirmation that their success in Spain has given them a wild card entry to the St Moritz leg of the World Match Racing Tour.
Later in the year the team will travel back to Perth for the Australia Cup which provides an opportunity to win an entry to the final event of the 2012 World Match Racing Tour, the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia.
