There was a great turnout for the two day Wairoa Regatta held over the weekend of 30 Nov – 1 December.
The event attracts yachties from around the region and Race Officer Tim Sandall kept track of the fifty boats that turned out from Ohope, Gisborne, Napier and the host club Wairoa.
Over half the fleet were juniors sailing Optis, P-Class, Firebugs and Starlings, with a rainbow Opti fleet well looked after by Peter Miller and the Firebugs ably assisted by the new YNZ Service Award winner Rod McCulloch.
A windy Saturday saw only two races completed, while Sunday’s conditions were lighter allowing three races to be sailed.
“Well done to the Wairoa Yacht Club for their hospitality during the weekend with the usual superb BBQ and social evening at the club,” says Regional Support Officer Wayne Holdt.
“This was the biggest regatta for years in Wairoa and having the support of the other east coast clubs has been crucial to the growing numbers. We now look forward to the Ohope Regatta in February and the Gisborne Regatta in March.”
