An historical account of the Waikawa Boating Club has been judiciously, sometimes painfully but more often happily narrated into a document now published into a book of 240 pages with over 200 photos.
The auspicious timing of author Tony FitzGerald’s visits to the club office coincided with the club executive's awareness of retaining and enabling the club's old documents to not only be held securely, but to also be presented in a format readily available to our membership. Tony leapt at the chance to put his genealogist skills to work, little knowing the hundreds of hours and sometimes tortuous paths he would be following.
Two-and-half-years on and Tony has interviewed, begged, borrowed and copied from everyone with a story to tell. Zigzagging his way through shared memories and sorting through the facts, some calls were a dead end - quite literally as we have only three surviving founding members left.
This is their story and it's our story. It is the stuff which has made the club what you see today. Our life is in print, it is a story of our members' exploits from 1950 through to the current day, the characters and even more the overriding enthusiasm to get us here.
The club will be launching It’s our Life – The Imperfect History of the Waikawa Boating Club on Saturday, October 28 at 3pm – everyone is welcome.
To purchase a copy, please contact the club on office@waikawaboatingclub.co.nz or phone (03) 573 6798. The book is selling for $45.
