Waikato Yacht Squadron to celebrate 50th anniversary

Issue date

A founding member of the Waikato Yacht Squadron will be on hand to help celebrate the 50-year reunion at the Hamilton Yacht Club on June 30.

Jack Jarvis was one of a number who helped establish the Waikato Trailer Yacht Squadron in 1968. The name was changed to Waikato Yacht Squadron in 1990 to embrace a growing number of keelboat owners.

Today it provides a club focus for around 80 boat-owning members and their families and they recently added their first multihull yacht. Nearly all sailing activities are based in the Hauraki Gulf and originate either from Kawakawa Bay where the Squadron operates a secure trailer yacht parking area, or Pine Harbour Marina where most keelers are moored.

The Waikato Yacht Squadron are calling on past and present members to come together at the Hamilton Yacht Club on June 30 (2-7pm) and share some “yarns from the past”.

"I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and sharing some good stories from the regular point-to-point sailing weekends," said former commodore Alan Ward, who has been a member for 40 years.

There will be a display of club memorabilia: photographs, models of club boats and other information about the club and its history.

To learn more or to register, please contact Alan or Jean Ward on wys50reg@gmail.com or 022 175 9612.
