Yachting New Zealand’s hugely successful Volvo Sailing...Have a Go! programme kicked off last week and has already seen 207 kids Have a Go! at sailing.
Volvo Sailing… Have A Go! is designed to give students between the ages of 8 and 12 years old the opportunity to experience the thrills of Sailing in a safe and convenient environment. The programme engages students in the marine environment, promotes water safety, builds confidence and independence, encourages teamwork and is, most importantly, fun!
Offered to schools throughout the country, Volvo Sailing…Have a Go! introduces potential new sailors to their local yacht club and host clubs are encouraged to use this opportunity to promote their Learn to Sail programme and club activities.
There are three trailers each containing six Optimists, two Toppers, one Weta Trimaran, one Rescue Boat, all necessary safety equipment, and one fully qualified and highly experienced sailing instructor. This season will see the trailers cover the country from Taipa to the Bluff, each comfortably towed by a Volvo XC90.
This year we welcome two new instructors, Milly Joseph and Henry Message, as well as returning instructor Reuben Corbett.
Reuben is back for his fourth season and will once again be covering the northern region. His experience and skills with running Volvo Sailing…Have a Go! is a huge asset.
Milly hails from Scotland but lives and works in Southampton, England. She brings with her a wealth of experience working with children and adults of varied learning abilities. She is looking after the central region, from Hamilton down to Wellington.
Henry is also from the UK but has spent the last few years chasing the sun, spending European summers working as a sailing instructor in Greece and last summer in Melbourne, running a similar programme to Volvo Sailing…Have a Go! He will be traveling the South Island. Look out for them on the road and at your local yacht club!
