Howick Sailing Club celebrated the Volvo National Sailing Day with its annual “Have a Go” day on the 1st February. Over 30 new sailors braved the drizzle to join us down at Howick Beach to have a go on one of the Club’s training Optimists, Junior Jollys or to experience the thrill on a Club member’s Paper Tiger.
It was a fun family day had by all with kids queuing to buddy up with our junior sailors in our 8 training optimists and 3 junior jollys. We also had a number of Dad and son/daughter combinations having a go racing each other. There was keen interest in the Club’s learn to sail programme and also from returning adult sailors looking to join Howick’s fun Sunday afternoon racing in both our mixed catamaran and laser fleets.
Of special interest to the sailors who attended was information on the re-introduction of an old Auckland icon – the Howick Autumn Sailing Series, to be sailed over the first four Sundays in May.
Many thanks to Volvo, New World and Yachting NZ for supporting family clubs like Howick Sailing Club in welcoming the wider community to the wonderful sport of sailing.
