Over 50 junior Optimist sailors were up bright and early for Confidence 1 & 2 and Learn to Race coaching in the morning. Rear Commodore Simon Probert, who leads the Optimist and RS Feva programmes at the Club is delighted with the growth and number of new sailors joining into Sunday morning from Learn to Sail.
Wakatere Volvo Day Masonic Cup Race – Sunbursts round the Masonic Mark to the delight of the cruise passengers
‘As always at Wakatere there is a great atmosphere on Sunday mornings and the Volvo day was special with lots of keen new sailors and their parents chipping in and helping each other with our parent led coaching programme’.
Wakatere Volvo Day Masonic Race – fun adventure – Green Fleeter heading home to Wakatere past Rough Rock
With loads of encouragement and the promise of huge fun on a destination sail, many Sunday morning sailors stayed on for the adventure of the Masonic Cup race in the afternoon. They were joined by green and open Optimist sailors, Starlings, Sunbursts, Lasers and OK Dinghies.
This was an amazing spectacle with a huge fleet of Wakatere sailors heading off from Narrow Neck beach out to Rough Rock and then round North Head to the Masonic mark – by the historic Masonic Tavern, and back home again.
The fleet numbered over 100 sailors and delighted the passengers of an incoming cruise ship who waved and cheered enthusiastically to our sailors. What a welcome for those visitors to Auckland and a thrill for our first time Masonic Cup sailors!
The club ended the day with the traditional BBQ in the sun on the front deck where the grins were as wide as the sausages were long.
A fantastic day of fun and adventure at Wakatere. Thanks to Volvo and Yachting NZ for your support.
