Volunteers needed for Yachting NZ youth trials

Issue date

The country's best young sailors will be battling it out for spots in the New Zealand team to compete at the Youth Sailing World Championships but volunteers are needed for the smooth running of the youth trials.

Manly Sailing Club on the Whangaparoa Peninsula will host about 80 children aged 14-19 at the Yachting New Zealand Youth Trials from October 11-15. This is being used as a selection regatta for the NZL Foundation youth team to compete at December's Youth Sailing World Championships in Sanya, China.

Trials will be held in all five youth classes: RS:X, 420, 29er, Laser Radial and Nacra 15. Athletes who win their classes will be nominated for selection but will still have to prove they are capable of good results at the youth worlds - New Zealand competed in eight of the nine events last year.

Volunteers are needed both on the water and onshore during the regatta at Manly.

"This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to upskill in this area, whether it's a race officer, mark layer or judge, or even just a parent who wants to get out and watch the racing this year," Yachting New Zealand youth co-ordinator Stu Thomas said.

Anyone willing to lend a hand on one of the days or across the entire regatta should get in touch with Stu on stuart@yachtingnz.org.nz
