The Opua Cruising Club was one of many Clubs around the country to open their doors on Sunday 16th February for the Volvo National Sailing & Boating Day.
The Northland Club tempted newcomers, and a few visitors, into the sport with a range of sailing opportunities from small dinghies through to a ride on TP52 Kia Kaha!
The Kia Kaha crew report; “It was a glorious summer's day in the Bay of Islands. We have taken part in the Yachting New Zealand National Sailing Day. Opua Cruising Club was the host of this event in the Bay of Islands.”
“We were keen enough to take a novice crew all the way out to Cape Brett... here a great shot of Hayden (wannabe Dean Barker), his first time ever on a yacht and by the time we headed home he was driving a TP52 - shot Hayden!”
“We had 11 people on board who never sailed before. From New Zealand, Germany, USA and Thailand – what a great diversity!”
“It was an awesome day to share the love of our sport and make it accessible for everyone. It looked like all our future yachties (all ages and all walk-of-life) had a grand day. Thanks to all the crew who came along and helped out!
