CIORC is Yachting New Zealand’s Cruising Inshore and Offshore Racing Committee. Formerly KORC, this new committee was formed a year ago, and has since been meeting regularly to discuss and further interests of both competitive and recreational sailors in keelboats, trailer yachts and multihull yachts.
The committee is made up from a mix of yacht club representatives and technical experts.
A topic which has been a big focus for this group is PHRF. They have been working on a better method of calculating and updating handicaps (Time Correction Factors) with the intent of improving the quality of racing, increasing participation by yacht owners and increasing the number of clubs using PHRF for their events and regular racing. Before this current PHRF validation period is over we will be bringing you details of the improved system.
Another key focus point has been around keelboat safety. CIORC have liaised with Angus Willison, Yachting New Zealand’s Safety and Technical Officer, to discuss medical kit requirements for Category 1, 2 and 3, advanced sea survival training and the quality and process of yacht inspections.
The group have also met with the New Zealand Trailer Yacht Association President, Alan Simpson, to consider how they can work together to help grow trailer yachting around New Zealand.
Roles of the committee include;
- Coordinate a calendar of major inshore, national, coastal and offshore events
- Oversee Handicap and Rating systems (PHRF / IRC) including promotion, administering and endorsement
- Establish Working Groups as needed to progress issues of safety, rating and measurement, participation and membership and bring recommendations to the Chief Executive for approval and adoption
- Assist Yachting New Zealand to review safety regulations and standards relating to keelboats, trailer yachts and multihull yachts for both racing and cruising
- Assist Yachting New Zealand to facilitate liaison between clubs and their activities
