Team NZ lend a hand to Pleasant Point Yacht Club

Issue date

After several weeks' work by a small band of Pleasant Point Yacht Club committee members, more than 400 people attended the fundraising evening with Emirates Team New Zealand at The Air Force Museum of New Zealand last Saturday.

Joe Sullivan and 97-year-old Pleasant Point Yacht Club life member Bob Scott with the America’s Cup.

PPYC commodore Alastair Burgess gave a presentation on the club’s history and our earthquake story, before ETNZ told their story. Filling in the gaps from what we knew through the various news reports and the race footage, the team were very generous with their time, sharing the story of their success backed with stunning video footage.

This was followed by a Q&A session and then the auction of 10 prizes run by Mike Pero Real Estate Auctioneer Fiona Kiwi.

Up for auction were helicopter rides with Richie McCaw, a horsepower experience driving a dual sulky behind top earning harness race horse, Monkey King, hot laps in a V8 Supercar with Greg Murphy, a holiday to Bali, tickets to the Australian Open men’s and women’s tennis finals in Melbourne including accommodation, a tour of Mike Pero’s Motorcycle Museum for 20 people and a signed, framed Emirates Team New Zealand polo shirt.

The evening finished with an informal mix and mingle with the ETNZ members on the floor with the cup taking pride of place and the centre of many photos.

PPYC extends our thanks to Emirates Team New Zealand, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and our sponsors for the night: Wendy Folau of Pilot Consulting, The Air Force Museum of New Zealand, Mike Pero Real Estate, Carl Taylor Homes, Hellers NZ’s Butcher, DOM Lodge, Christchurch Helicopters, Hammock Insurance, and Pixel Productions who ran the audio visual and lighting for the night.

We must also thank Media Works and their local radio network and NZME, both of whom ran sponsored radio ads in the weeks running up to the night.

With out all those individuals and companies support; the evening would not have been such a success.
