A six-strong New Zealand team will be hoping to replicate what Sarah Dunckley did in 2016 when they compete at October's Hansa world championships in Japan.
Dunckley, who sails for both Sailability Wellington and the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, won the Liberty class by nine points in the Netherlands two years ago but won't be back to defend her title.
This year's team consists of two paraplegics, a tetraplegic, a thalidomide survivor, an amputee and a sailor with cerebral palsy; most of whom would be unable to compete at Paralympic level. The team will be competing in the single-handed Liberty class, some sailed manually, others with electric steering and winches.
The New Zealand Hansa Class Association have created a Givealittle page to help send the team to Hiroshima. The funds raised would be put towards:
- Container shipping, stevedoring, Japanese carnet
- Team uniform
- Coach fees, airfares and accommodation
- Team transport in Hiroshima
- Fuel for RIB safety boat
- Insurance
