Talented young up and comer Leonard Takahashi-Fry, representing the Wanganui/Manawatu region has secured the 2013 Tanner Cup in trying conditions.
Cameron Moss from North Harbour was second with Cole Rippey, from Bay of Plenty, third.
Nelson Yacht Club is playing host to the prestigious Tanner and Tauranga Cup Regattas this week with uncharacteristic weather playing its part in the regional Tanner Cup event which was sailed over Sunday and Monday.
“We’ve seen five knots and we’ve seen 30 knots,” says Kate Spackman, Regional Support Officer for Yachting New Zealand. “Unfortunately we couldn’t get the scheduled six races in and the Tanner Cup was decided on four races this year.”
Three races were sailed on Nelson Bay on Sunday in light northerly conditions, with Takahashi-Fry recording a clean sweep of race wins on day one.
On Monday sailors and race officials had to contend with a transition from northerly to southerly with shifts and gusts aplenty, making just one race possible before conditions deteriorated forcing an early end to racing.
Obviously more accustomed to strong winds Wellington’s George Gautrey won Monday’s race. But a third place on the water for Takahashi-Fry was enough to secure him the Tanner Cup for 2013.
Tuesday sees the 2012 Tauranga Cup get underway with nine races planned over three days. 34 young sailors from around New Zealand are in Nelson for the regatta with the winner to be crowned Thursday. In 2012 Isaac McHardie from Waikato won both the Tanner and Tauranga Cups.
