Starlings, Optis and Open Handicap all in action at French Bay BC for VNSBD

Issue date

French Bay Boating Club used Volvo National Sailing and Boating Day to race their Starling, Optimist and Open Handicap fleets as part of our Summer Series.

The day presented a light Southerly with a hint of West in it and Don Waterer, one of the club's most senior members, ran some excellent racing for the Open and Starling fleets. FBYC's handicap system is working well across the Laser, 3.7 and Jollyboats but the light conditions favoured the Jollyboats with wins on corrected time going to Paddy J109, Mike J150, and Jeff J138 with Oliver taking out the Starlings.

The tide made for a very tactical windward leg with the fleets experimenting with the downwind legs on both sides of the course. The Optis were kept out of the savagery of the tide inshore and got four races away under the direction of Clive Brown with wins to Carlos, Gavin and Sam.

French Bay's accent is on family participation, which has been the key to our club's growth and the day was run smoothly and efficiently by Jenni and Simon Catley who looked after feeding and Officer of the Day duties respectively with their daughters Meg and Elise afloat.

Thanks to Volvo for getting involved with yachting at a grass roots level.
