Situations Vacant - Yachting New Zealand Women's Sailing Manager

Issue date

Women’s Sailing Manager
Yachting New Zealand
Takapuna, Auckland
Fixed term (3 years)

New Zealand has a large number of females involved in sailing who have the potential to go places in the sport and we need someone to help them get there. Yachting New Zealand have created an exciting opportunity for a women’s sailing manager. This is a new role that has many layers to it, from developing a sustainable sport-wide strategy, understanding the barriers to females progressing and remaining in the sport, working out ways to increase and retain more women in sailing, including coaches, and developing and leading Yachting New Zealand’s Laser Radial programme. We said it is exciting, and the successful applicant will get to work with a great team across all levels of the sport.

About Yachting New Zealand

Yachting New Zealand is the national sports organisation for sailing and boating in the country, with the principal aim of helping New Zealanders access, enjoy and succeed on the water for life. We are a non-profit organisation of approximately 25 employees around the country and more than 250 member clubs, class associations and organisations, so the breadth of our activity stretches from the grassroots through to the elite level. The high performance programme is the envy of many countries, highlighted by the fact New Zealand won a record-equalling four medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Role Summary

The Women’s Sailing Manager is a new role and we need someone to develop it and own it. It means focusing on females at all levels of the sport and a big part of it will be developing a 10-year strategy and execution of that plan to increase the numbers, capability and success of women in sailing. That will require a better understanding of the barriers to girls and women developing and remaining in sailing, but you won’t do it in isolation, working with the great teams at Yachting New Zealand and Sport New Zealand and developing key relationships with a raft of individuals and groups from clubs and coaches to schools and sailors.

The main outcomes of the role will be seen across four key areas:

  1. Coaching / campaigns
Developing and leading Yachting New Zealand’s Laser Radial programme; supporting young sailors with campaign planning; and working with the high performance team
  2. Strategy
Developing a sustainable sport-wide strategy to increase participation and retention across all levels of the sport; working with junior and youth classes to provide education and support and build retention of participants in development pathways; and attending key events and clinics nationwide
  3. Coach development
Working with Yachting New Zealand’s coach development manager to increase and retain the number of women’s coaches
  4. High performance
Working with the high performance team to maximise New Zealand’s performance at the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games and beyond

We’re looking for a pretty special person who’s passionate, creative, honest and composed; someone who’s not afraid to ask questions, is a good team player and has the ability to travel overseas. You’ll need to have experience as a sailing coach but also working with a range of people from young and elite athletes to sports organisations and other key stakeholders. If that sounds like you, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of one of New Zealand’s most consistently successful and popular sports. We have historically been at the forefront of sailing and think this new role will not only keep us there but deliver us even more success at all levels of the sport in the future.
