Sailing Competitors urged to sign up now for WMG2017 to avoid disappointment as some sports sell out

Issue date

With two sports already sold out and three more nearing capacity, Sailing competitors should register now for World Masters Games 2017 to secure their places.

That’s the message from David Abercrombie of Yachting New Zealand who says registrations for the 2017 Games are currently tracking ahead of Sydney 2009, which were the most successful Games to date and attracted a record 29,000 participants.

“Football and softball have already sold out and we don’t want any of our Sailing competitors to miss out on the unique opportunity to compete in a World Masters Games on home soil,” David Abercombie says.

WMG2017 organisers are expecting 25,000 athletes to compete in Auckland next year and are keen to accommodate as many athletes as possible. But there is a limit to the number of participants that can compete in many sports, particularly team sports, due to venue capacities.

Since registrations opened in February this year, they have been on a ‘first come, first served’ basis with athletes, including Sailing competitors urged to get their registrations in early to secure their places.

Abercrombie says with a big uptake from overseas athletes keen to visit Auckland and New Zealand for the Games, and the rate of registrations increasing as the event gets closer, it’s up to Kiwi Sailing competitors to get organised quickly and sign up to take on the world.

“The event management team from Torbay Sailing Club and Yacht New Zealand as sport delivery partners are doing everything we can to accommodate all those who want to participate,” he says. “Where sports are particularly popular, every effort will be made to extend capacity, however late comers could find that they miss out.”
