Rules Forum with Doug Elder
Thursday night YNZ hosted a rules forum with Doug Elder. The evening discussion was as a fantastic opportunity for the group of coaches and sailors to discuss some common rule breaches and get an insight into what the Judges are looking for when on the water.
The interactive evening had videos on sculling, rocking off the line, windward boat keeping clear on the start line and tacking at the top mark. Then a questions and discussion over coaches experiences covered areas of luffing and overlaps using model boats and marks.
These rule forums are an excellent way of creating a discussion and working through scenarios. We looked at what rule is relevant, was the rule broken, what avoiding action could have been taken by either boat and what the consequence of the decision would have been.
Some of the videos were taken from the view of a judge, Doug gave a great explanation of what the judges look for, how different classes vary in their tolerance for each rule and how standing out from the group can have consequences.
The next work shop is due for the Winter Champs. More information will be posted on the Facebook group. https://www.facebook.com/groups/482168951854147/
