The 2014 420 National Championship concluded on 16th March at Evans Bay, Wellington with Olivia Mackay and Abby Goodwin (NSC) returning to re win their 2013 National title. Cameron Moss and Taylor Balogh (NPYC) were 2nd and Sam Barnett/Zac Merton (TYPBC) were 3rd also taking out selection for the 2014 NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team.
The 420 fleet of 19 boats (20 in 2013) experienced a fantastic four day regatta including a full wind package from the effects of cyclone Lusi and the additional good benefits of NRO’s (Paul Davies) excellent focus on safety. The National Regatta of nine races presented fair, yet challenging conditions for all, including two races with light winds and seven races of steady 14 – 21 knot winds. Evans Bay delivered the normal fun wind veins to challenge tactics.
The fleet included eight female crews (42% of the fleet). Female teams took more than half (70%) of the top ten fleet results. The strength of female teams, many new to the 420 Class, highlighted the ease and fun with which girls can adapt to sail 420 yachts. Recent adapted new entrant included 2014 P Class Tauranga Cup winner Kate Stewart with Eliza Wilkinson (KYC) finishing 4th, after including two 1sts in their score.
Equally remarkable was the result of current WBBC Optimist sailor Samuel Bacon (13yrs) helming with experienced skiff sailor and crew Emma Berry. Emma with Samuel, who had not been in a 420 for six years, finished a remarkable 6th.
The 420 Class were extremely appreciative of Evans Bay Club opening up their Club rooms for the Class Regatta and enjoyed the competitive presence of the four WBBC boats.
The 420 Class association has opened applications for a South Island Main Centre Club to host the 2015 420 Class Nationals.
