The 2014 NZ Women's Keel Boat Championships were sailed in perfect shifty south westerly conditions this weekend. A great improvement on previous years when the girls have been greeted with 20 to 30kn breezes on the first day.
After 10 races over the 2 days Kylie Jameson's crew with 8 wins were deserved winners.
They were chased hard by last year’s winner, Karleen Dixon and her crew who only had one place worse than 2nd for the whole regatta.
Melinda Henshaw was third. Her crew steadily improved as the regatta went on. Points for Sunday showed just how close the racing became, with Kylie on 9, Melinda on 10 and consistent Karleen on 11 for the day.
Katie Clark's Manly Sailing Club crew came the furthest for the regatta - well done girls, it's time some other crews from outside Auckland joined the fray! Maybe next year we should introduce a prize for the first team from out side of Auckland!
Thank you to Megan Kensington and her RNZYS race management team for the great race management and Mel for her behind the scenes organisation and also to the Etchell’s for combining their nationals with ours. (It's interesting to note that there were more women sailors on the water than Etchell sailors!)
Next year ladies please make sure your friends plan their weddings for another time of the year - thanks to all!
