Kohimarama Yacht Club sailors were to the fore in the annual Auckland Intermediate (Year 7 & 8) Regatta held Thursday 21 November in Auckland. Remuera Intermediate won the event which totals the points scored in fleet racing of the best three sailors from each school.
46 entrants from 19 schools across greater Auckland competed in the three race series for the Kohi Cup (1st) and Marama Cup (2nd) for best school.
Remuera Intermediate’s William Shapland, Sam Morgan and Pat Morgan were the three best placed sailors with a combined total of 56 points and regained the Kohi Cup which was lost last year to this year’s runners up Belmont Intermediate (Johnathon Nicholas, Johnathon Weston and Robbie McCutheon) with their total of 71 points. Third place went to Albany Junior High on 108 points, and fourth was Kristen School on 168 points
Individual honours went to Lewis Anderson of Kohia Terrace School with 8 points on count back from William Shapland (Remuera Intermediate). Sebastian Lardes of Sacred Heart College was third on 11 points.
Racing was held in a mix of conditions as the breeze strengthened during the day from a gentle 5-7 knots for race one to a brisk 15-17 knots for race 3 with a decent chop developing as the outgoing tide opposed the building sea breeze making for some fantastic sailing conditions. Hamish Hey, YNZ Northern Region RSO, who was Race Officer for the event, was kept on his toes with the shifting breeze and a number of general recalls.
