The four Yachting New Zealand regional development managers take a look at what has been happening in their areas and also offer a reminder to clubs about having an authorised purchaser.
The current lockdown across the country is the perfect time to check whether your club has an approved purchaser or if details need to be updated.
Yachting New Zealand’s learn-to-sail resources and services are available to purchase from the online shop, but only to authorised club purchasers. These individuals can then purchase immediately using a credit card or a request to be invoiced.
To become the authorised club purchaser for your club, you need to have an existing user account on the Yachting New Zealand website AND then apply to Yachting New Zealand to become the official purchaser by completing the form on this page.
Once approved, you can simply log into the website to access the extra products and special pricing.
Yachting New Zealand allow for up to two authorised club purchasers per affiliated member yacht club, so we suggest you discuss this at the club to determine who should apply for this role. If your club has already done this, it might be worth checking the individual is still a club member by emailing Yachting New Zealand office administrator Robyn Agnew.
Anchor AIMS Games
A number of regattas and events have been cancelled or postponed due to the latest Covid-19 lockdown, including the Anchor AIMS Games.
More than 11,000 competitors across 23 sports, including sailing, were due to compete in the AIMS Games in Tauranga in early September but it was cancelled for the second year running.
"We are gutted for so many people - for the supporting schools, businesses, the incredible code-coordinators, the national sporting bodies, the supporters and most of all, the athletes themselves," tournament director Vicki Semple said. "The sport coordinators have worked tirelessly for the best part of a year to build their teams and set things in place but our greater consideration is for the good of all New Zealanders and there's no way we want to compromise or jeopardise our wider fight against Covid-19."
Next year's AIMS Games have already been scheduled for September 3-9, 2022.
Auckland Junior Winter Sprint Series
This weekend's fifth round of Auckland Junior Winter Sprint Series, due to be held at the Kohimarama Yacht Club, has also been cancelled.
The last round of the series held at the Wakatere Boating Club once again attracted healthy fleets.
"It's really impressive to see the big turnout over the winter and great to see clubs working together and sharing resources," Yachting New Zealand regional development manager Hayden Whitburn said. "The racing has been running like clockwork and sailors are enjoying the shorter races. Thank you to all the clubs and volunteers for making this happen."
It's still hoped the final round of the series, which incorporates the Icebreaker regatta, will still take place at the Murrays Bay Sailing Club on September 18.

SSANZ are keen to run the third race of the Lewmar Triple Series on September 4 but will only do it if the Auckland area returns to level 1 or level 2.
SSANZ will actively monitor the situation and will consider their options in the event it can't be run the race as planned. More information will be provided once the current Covid-19 situation becomes clearer.
Queen Charlotte Yacht Club
The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club have worked with local council to improve Picton’s popular Shelly Beach Reserve and make it more appealling, safer and accessible for the public.
The club's redevelopment, which was completed last year, has opened up an area of the reserve and shoreline not available as public open space for the past 70-80 years. There will also be double the grass space for locals and visitors to enjoy.
This summer, beachgoers will have two formed swimming areas to choose from once the works are complete, one to the north of the yacht club building and the other to the south, where the club has donated a new floating diving and jumping platform.
The work was expected to be done by late August.
