On October 8th there was a record turn out for an Inclusive Coaching workshop at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club, attended by twenty two people from seven different yacht clubs. The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation and Yachting New Zealand delivered the workshop together as a coach orientated workshop that enhances current knowledge and promotes the inclusion of disabled sailors.
Topics covered included:
- Overview of the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation
- An introduction to the Inclusion Spectrum
- Techniques to modify an activity to suit all abilities
- Good Coaching Technique
- Use of YNZ Learn to Sail disability suppliment
- Sailing Opportunities for disabled people
- Equipment demonstration
The Inclusive Coaching Workshops are a great opportunity for coaches of all levels to add a free qualification and experience to their coaching toolbox. It is especially important for LTS Coaches (previously, Club Instructors) and those that may be delivering YNZ's Learn to Sail Level 1 & 2 disability supplement, a guide to modifying the LTS Syllabus to suit a sailor with a physical disability. Not only will attendees learn a set of useful techniques and background knowledge for working with disabled sailors, this learning can be applied to a mixed environment where a coach may have a range of ability or experience within one group.
These sport specific courses are typically run in Auckland once per year, and at any other locations around NZ as requested. They are free to attend and are reccomended for anybody delivering Learn to Sail or coaching at club level. Contact Kristine Lederis if you would like one to be held in your region.
