Race to Rio Corporate Challenge to support Kiwi SKUD Sailing

Issue date

Here’s an opportunity for an amazing experience on the water with the added bonus of knowing you’re helping two of New Zealand’s most deserving athletes as they reach towards their goals.

Tim Dempsey and Gemma Fletcher are ‘Kiwi SKUD Sailing’ and their ultimate goal is to get to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and to win New Zealand’s first ever Paralympic sailing medal.

On Thursday 8 October a major fundraising event to support their campaign will feature former America’s Cup racing yachts NZL41 and NZL68 and NZL Sailing Team’s 49erFX sailors Alexandra Maloney and Molly Meech – and YOU can be part of the action.

  • Gemma and Tim will be on hand to assist and commentate on the action!
  • Spot prizes for spectators and sailors, plus a prize-giving ceremony at the end of each race session.
  • All proceeds to the Kiwi SKUD Sailing Paralympic campaign

More about Tim Dempsey and Gemma Fletcher – Kiwi SKUD Sailing

Tim Dempsey and Gemma Fletcher are an aspiring sailing duo with their eyes firmly on winning New Zealand’s first Paralympic sailing medal at Rio in 2016.

Dempsey, a former Paralympic sailor, suffers from Muscular Dystrophy which is a progressive muscle wasting condition, while Fletcher, an upcoming young sailor, received a spinal injury after a severe car accident at the age of four and has been a wheelchair user since.

Both refuse to let their lives be ruled by adversity and are an inspiration not only to other sailors but everyone they meet.

The pair joined forces in late 2013 with the goal of competing at the 2016 Paralympics. With over a year of sailing together under their belt they are definitely proving to be on track after winning silver at their latest World Cup event in Melbourne Australia.
