The Yachting New Zealand HRG Race Management Seminar held at Vauxhall Yacht Club on the 3rd and 4th September finished off a successful winter series of race management training around the country.
84 participants attended the four seminars held over the winter months, in the four major cities- Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin. Attendees ranged in experience from absolute beginners in Race Management up to National and International Race Officers and Judges, providing an opportunity for knowledge and experience to be shared.
John and Linda Parrish once again facilitated these seminars this year, with a bit of a gap halfway through when John popped over to Rio to officiate the Nacra 17 course at the Olympics.
“We are continually amazed at the attendees’ enthusiasm for, and keenness to participate in race management” says John. “Our aim in the seminars is to help race managers apply the yacht racing rules in a consistent and fair manner so sailors can concentrate on making their boats go fast and not have to try to second guess race management. A theme this year was that “the client knows best” and race management should always endeavour to consider what the sailors want.”
The HRG Race Management Seminars cover a range of topics over the two days, from race organisation and course laying to starting and finishing procedures, as well as working through real life scenarios. There is certainly a lot of information and expertise imparted and it can be a lot to absorb, but all who attended this year had positive comments regarding the weekend and considered it to be a great investment of time.
HRG Race Management Seminars will be back again next winter. If you would like to host a Race management seminar in your region, please contact Danika at danika@yachtingnz.org.nz or (09) 361 4028
