For those women in Auckland who weren’t contesting for the Women’s Keelboat Nationals last weekend, the other star attraction on April 29th was the Auckland Sailing Club’s annual Queen of the Waves event. This is a regatta where all the female skiff sailors come out of the woodwork to sail on a 12’ or 18’ skiff.
With the women’s skiff event having been announced for the 2016 Olympics (then equipment was not selected, now it will be the NZ designed 49erFX- yay!), recruiting crews for the lads this year was easier than ever before.
A star studded fleet of some of NZ’s top female sailors including current Olympian Olivia ‘Polly’ Powrie tried their hand in want was probably best described as placid conditions.
Olivia ‘Polly’ Powrie sailed with YNZ Regional Support Officer Hamish Hey to take victory in both races, beating sister Miranda who sailed with Leon Oliver.
In the 18’ foot skiff, well known female skiff sailor Molly Meech with the Auckland Sailing Club team won the privilege of slice the “Queens Cake” and a bottle of vino.
