Showing dominance at the inaugural Professionals Elliott 6 Youth Championships over Labor Weekend was the team from Queen Charlotte Yacht Club who took out the event with a clean sweep of the scoreboard.
The superbly organised inter-club contest comprised three days of fleet racing held from Naval Point Yacht Club using the clubs’ fleet of Elliott 6’s to rotate among crew over 15 races.
Exciting sailing conditions greeted competitors to start with a North Easterly breeze varying from a steady 18 knots with waves on the first day to 12-20 knots on the second day. Lighter crews enjoyed more favorable winds on the third day in 8-10 knots when the final races were tightly contested with double points at stake.
The Regatta is the first in the clubs’ long term vision for their youth program as well as a South Island Elliott program. Sponsored by The Professionals Christchurch, Colin Lock said he had vision for the event to be part of a National Youth Circuit.
Noted for it’s appealing timing, Labor weekend provides three days of sailing prior to the full swing of school exams. With Christchurch on the main route for airlines it’s also easy and cost effective for North Island crews to compete in the event.
For youth sailors, this is an event to put on the Sailing Calendar for 2017.
Final Results were
1st Queen Charlotte 15 Pts
