The Optimist national championships were due to get under way in Wellington this weekend but will now take place in November, making the Optis one of the first classes to identify new dates in what has been a severely interrupted year.
The national championships will now be held at the Worser Bay Boating Club on November 6-9. This is usually when the Optimist North Island championships are held but, through the support of the Napier Sailing Club and Taupo Yacht Club, will instead be the nationals.
The regatta will find the class national champion for 2020, including the white and green fleets, and count 20 percent towards rankings in the open fleet for the 2020/21 season.
A final decision on whether the regatta goes ahead will be made before September 18 and will depend on whether the current Covid-19 outbreak has been contained.
Any other classes or clubs who have rescheduled events can enter them on the Yachting New Zealand regatta calendar.
