Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta all set to go

Issue date

Yachting New Zealand are excited to confirm next week's Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta is still going ahead, with the fleets now split between three venues.

The event was due to be held at the Wakatere Boating Club on February 17-20. Wakatere will still host the kitefoilers alongside the windfoiling national championships but the 420s, 470s, ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) and ILCA 7 (Laser) will be based at the Takapuna Boating Club and 29ers, 49ers and 49erFXs will operate out of the Murrays Bay Sailing Club.

The changes have been brought about by event limits under the red setting of the Covid Protection Framework, which allows for an event of up to 100 people who are fully vaccinated.

"We were really determined to see the Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta go ahead and it's been awesome to have the clubs come on board and support us so we can run the event under the government event guidelines," Yachting New Zealand youth and events manager Sam Mackay said. "Three venues means it should run really efficiently and we expect to see some quality racing."

The Oceanbridge NZL Sailing Regatta is this country's premier Olympic and youth classes event and also doubles as this year's selection trials for the NZL Sailing Foundation Youth Team.

The New Zealand youth team will be selected from results and it's hoped they will be able to compete at this year's youth sailing world championships in the Netherlands.

"This is obviously a different sort of event than we normally run but we're still confident we're going to see some terrific racing over the four days, and that's the main thing," Mackay said.

Entries have closed and no late entries will be accepted. You can find more information on how the regatta will run on the event page.

Volunteers are still needed, so please contact Sam Mackay or register online here if you can help.
