NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team update: Kiwi 29ers back into 3rd after day three

Issue date

The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team was back in action today in Tavira, Portugal for day three of the 2014 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

It was a good day for New Zealand’s 29er skiff pair of Markus Somerville and Isaac McHardie who have regained 3rd place on the leader-board after some excellent performances today. With a 4, 3, 5 in the three races sailed the kiwi pair are back in 3rd and just one point behind the USA crew in 2nd.

Kiwi multihull crew Micah Wilkinson and Jack Rogers are now in 6th in the SL16 standings. They also sailed three races scoring 11, 5, 6 on the water today.

Team Manager Ian Neely says; “Tough conditions and tough racing here on the Mediterranean.”

“We have two more days of racing and everyone will be focussing on the basics and just keep chipping away.”

Boy’s Laser Radial sailor Trent Rippey had his best day yet with an 11 and a 16, and climbs up the ranks into 18th overall. In the girl’s single-handed fleet Ali Nightingale has dipped to 34th.

Over in the boy’s and girl’s 420 events two races were sailed. Sam Barnett and Zak Merton are lying 20th after a 20, 24 today, while Olivia Mackay and Abby Goodwin scored 25, 18 in today’s two races and lie 19th overall.

No racing was possible for the windsurfers today, sailing out but then returning to shore due to light winds. Both Patrick Haybittle and Xanthe Bowater retain their places, both in 16th, going into day four of the regatta.

Each nation is allowed only one entry per class and the kiwis are up against the best youth sailors from around the world.

Racing resumes tomorrow for what will be the penultimate day of the regatta.
