Nick Egnot-Johnson tops Aussie Opti Nationals

Issue date

Peter Burling is not the only kiwi showing them how it’s done across the Tasman – Nick Egnot-Johnson has finished at the top of the leader-board at the 2013 Australian Optimist National Championship Regatta where a fleet of 130 sailors were racing in the Open division.

With international sailors not eligible, officially Annabelle Davies from Western Australia is crowned 2013 Australian Optimist Champion, yet it was the young kiwi who topped the leader-board with a five point margin. Racing wrapped up over the weekend at Hobart’s Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Tasmania, where the regatta took place from 8th – 13th January.

Nick, who represents Murrays Bay Sailing Club, clearly had the measure of the fleet with a scorecard including seven race wins and four 2nds. His two discards were a 3rd and a 4th!

Nick’s Mum, Leslie Egnot describes what Hobart was like; “The regatta was sailed in wildly varying conditions under Hobart’s Mt Wellington. The predominant westerly breeze coming off the mountain produced shifty conditions with the wind speed often jumping from 5 knots to over 30 knots within a leg and large shifts in direction.”

Nick’s younger sisiter Sophie Egnot-Johnson was also there and finished 31st overall.
