A Vignette of this year’s art deco sailing event in Napier 16th of February 2013....
It was the art deco sail through the middle of the world’s art deco capital’s art deco weekend. And Sailability Hawke’s Bay led the way. Until we were overtaken by everybody else. Even those sailing ships from the 1930s. That historical relic from the 1130s-the Matau A Maui, a double hulled sailing waka- launched with us, and we managed to outpace the ancient beast, but the Polynesians’ knowledge saw them take a shortcut and beat us home.
Nevertheless, the route from the sailing club, up and out and roundabout Napier’s port’s point with a straight stretch down the Marine Parade to the Veronica Bell and the cheering flappers and toffs, and (whew)home again was a welcome stretch of the sail from our normal racing rink. Our trusty Sailability squadron-two liberties and two 303s- weathered the fair weather well to the fair Veronica Bell and, although we won’t boast that we bested in the Boaters and Blazers Chase, we did have a blast. It was great to be part of such a special event for Napier and Hawke’s Bay and a huge thank you to the Sailability team and the Napier Sailing Club for organising us all.
