Wellington’s Lowry Bay Yacht Club is holding an Orienteering Boat Rally on 15th March.
The new initiative is a cross between the sport of orienteering and the Amazing race.
Grant McNamara from the Club explains; “How it works is that each boat receives a set of instructions immediately prior to setting off. Each set of instructions is somewhat unique; the main difference being the order of steps. The instructions (some a little cryptic or deliberately ambiguous) provide a course to follow, as well as things to look out for on the way.”
“There are also a couple of short onshore visits where additional instructions, tasks, penalties or rewards might be picked up. Oh and there’s a nautical quiz to complete too.”
Sailing boats can choose whether they sail or motor the course and motorboats can take part too.
“Any vessel capable of a 20 nautical mile trip around Wellington's beautiful harbour is welcome.”
All entrants return to the Lowry Bay Yacht Club clubhouse no later than 1730 for a BBQ and prize giving.
Generous sponsors include; NZ Sailing.Net, Wellington Ocean Sports, Pete Lamb Fishing, Evans Bay Club Boat Yard and the Water Safety Council.
