Yachting New Zealand has honoured 22 individuals with Life Membership. The honours were confirmed at the 2012 Annual General Meeting, and recognise exemplary contribution to Yachting New Zealand and to the interests of yachting generally.
The list of new Life Members includes men and women whose contributions to Yachting New Zealand are wide ranging. Olympic sailing medallists, America’s Cup accomplishments, promotion of the sport and support of sailors are among the achievements and contributions that these individuals are being recognised for.
These individuals have inspired generations of New Zealand’s young people to participate and excel in yachting and their contribution to Yachting New Zealand is as a part of this nation’s continuing legacy of Olympic sailing success.
The new Yachting New Zealand Life Members are;
- Jo Aleh- For her Olympic Gold Medal won at the London Games in 2012.
- Tom Ashley- For his Olympic Gold Medal won at the Beijing Games in 2008.
- Grant Beck- For his enormous contribution through coaching and mentoring of New Zealand’s most successful boardsailors and his status as New Zealand’s most successful Olympic Coach ever.
- Peter Burling- For his Olympic Silver Medal won at the London Games in 2012.
- Peter Cornes - For the significant support provided over many years to New Zealand’s high performing sailors allowing them to achieve international success in yachting and making all New Zealanders proud.
- Sir Russell Coutts- For his Olympic Gold Medal won at the Los Angeles Games in 1984, success in America’s Cup sailing and many other significant accomplishments across all aspects of the sport of yachting.
- Don Cowie- For his Olympic Silver Medal won in Barcelona 1992, and his significant accomplishments in America’s Cup sailing and coaching.
- Jack Cropp- For his Olympic Gold Medal won at the Melbourne Games in 1956.
- Neville Crichton – For his many yachting accomplishments in keelboat ocean racing and the significant positive impact his yacht building projects have brought to the sport of yachting in New Zealand.
- John Cutler- For his Olympic Bronze Medal won at the Seoul Games in 1988 and his many accomplishments in America’s Cup sailing.
- Rod Davis- For his Olympic Silver Medal won at the Barcelona Games in 1992, his accomplishments in America’s Cup sailing and his continued contribution to the sport as an administrator and coach.
- Leslie Egnot- For her Olympic Silver Medal won at the Barcelona Games in 1992, her accomplishments in America’s Cup sailing and her continued contribution to the sport as an administrator and coach.
- Sir Colin Giltrap - For the significant support provided over many years to New Zealand’s high performing sailors allowing them to achieve international success in yachting and making all New Zealanders proud.
- Bruce Kendall- For his Olympic Gold and Bronze Medals won at the Seoul Games in 1988 and Los Angeles Games in 1984 as well as his on-going coaching and mentoring of young sailors.
- Craig Monk- For his Olympic Bronze Medal won at the Barcelona Games in 1992 and his significant accomplishments in America’s Cup sailing.
- Peter Montgomery, MBE- For his enormous contribution to the sport of yachting in New Zealand through years of promoting sailing to the nation through his coverage of Olympic Games, Americas Cup and ocean racing, as well as his continuing role in the profiling and support of grass roots and domestic yachting.
- Aaron McIntosh- For his Olympic Bronze Medal won at the Sydney Games in 2000 and his coaching accomplishments.
- Olivia Powrie- For her Olympic Gold Medal won at the London Games in 2012.
- Rex Sellers- For his Olympic Gold and Silver Medals won at the Seoul Games in 1988 and Los Angeles Games in 1984.
- Jan Shearer- For her Olympic Silver Medal won at the Barcelona Games in 1992.
- Blair Tuke- For his Olympic Silver Medal won at the London Games in 2012.
- Earl Wells- For his Olympic Gold Medal won at the Tokyo Games in 1964.
