Seven New Zealanders from around the country are racing overseas today at the Chaaya Blu Asian Optimist Championships at Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. At the time of sending briefings, six races have been completed, and the regatta is due to conclude after three more days of racing on June 9th.
Yesterday, sailors still had to endure three races in 18 to 24 knots of wind, steady in strength but with 15 degree shifts in direction. The sea, however, was flat, making life easier (or at least not so difficult and tiring) for the younger and smaller sailors.
Today (as you receive Briefings on Wednesday night) the top four New Zealanders will be starting two days the International Optimist Teams Racing Challenge, and they go in ranked fifth best country.
Four of these young NZ sailors are inside the top 20 and the team as a whole is faring well.
New Zealand’s standings after 6 races:
12th Cole Rippey- Tauranga
13th Henry Gibbs – QCYC/ Worser Bay
16th Ava Mannering – Napier
17th Travers Cole CBYC
29th Joshua Handa – MBSC
41st Blake Woodfield- Taupo/Napier
70th Kerensa Jennings- MBSC
