Issue date

New Zealand’s Josh Junior has finished 9th at the 2013 Finn Gold Cup. The Olympic class world championship regatta has just wrapped up in Tallin, Estonia where a total of eight races mostly in very light wind conditions.

In todays medal race sailors waited until 2pm for a stable breeze when the race got underway in 6-8 knots. Junior, lying 10th going into the last double-points finale, crossed in 6th to improve one position and record a final result of 9th place at this key regatta on the Finn calendar.

“It’s fantastic to have made the medal race after what has been a very trying week. There are plenty of big names not near the front, so it’s great to still be there at the end,” says Josh Junior.

The 23 year old from Worser Bay Boating Club’s best result at an Olympic class world championship is a 6th at the 2010 Laser World Championships and after switching to campaign the Finn during 2012 has now amassed four top ten results at major international Finn regattas during 2013; 8th at ISAF Sailing World Cup Palma, bronze at ISAF Sailing World Cup Hyeres, 5th at the recent Finn European Championship and 9th at the Finn Gold Cup.

Team-mates Andrew Murdoch and Matt Coutts finished the regatta in 29th and 30th place respectively.

The 2013 Finn World title went to 21 year old Brazilian sailor Jorge Zarif, Ed Wright (GBR) took the silver and Pieter-Jan Postma (NED) the bronze.
