Jack Tar Auckland Regatta ready to hit the harbour for 2016!
One of the country’s biggest regattas is getting ready to hit the water this weekend on Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. The Jack Tar Auckland Regatta 2016, a join initiative between the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and Buckland’s Beach Yacht Club.
This year the Jack Tar Auckland Regatta is back bigger and better than ever, with some brand new initiatives including Friday Nights’ Southern Cross Sprint Series, which will prove to be very exciting as it’s competed in by our fleet of competitive TP 52’s. Team Beau Geste, fresh off winning the Bay of Islands Race Week, will be the team to beat, although they will have plenty of competition behind them including fellow 52’s Viento, Mayhem and Temptation – to only name a few.
The popularity of this year’s edition is already building, and is shown by the increase in entries on last year’s regatta. With 3 days left to enter, it showing promising signs for the weekend’s numbers.
There is also have a very exciting fleet of multihulls competing this year, including two GC32 Foiling catamarans and three SL33 Foiling Catamarans, who will all be keen to do well as they fly above the water.
Another new aspect to the regatta which is sure to make it run even better in 2016 is the addition of a new results system – Top Yacht. Top Yacht is an Australian system used by many of the major Yacht Clubs and Race Managers around the world, and we even have the designers of the program flying over just to make sure it operates at its peak performance.
The Sailing Office at RNZYS are keen to see Top Yacht in action - “We are thoroughly looking forward to using this great new results system for the Jack Tar Auckland Regatta, we know it is proven to be a successful program and it can only enhance our sailors overall experience throughout the entire regatta” – RNZYS Sailing Director Laurie Jury.
One thing the Race Officers can’t control is the weather, but at this stage it is fairly clear with constant winds making for some great racing at our courses near Northern Leading and off the Eastern Beaches, both courses sponsored by PIC Insurance Brokers.
The Jack Tar Auckland Regatta is also renowned for its social aspect, which will culminate into a great party to be held in the RNZYS Dinghy Locker on Saturday evening, followed by the regatta Prizegiving on Sunday evening in the RNZYS Ballroom.
