ISAF Youth: One race remains

Issue date

Eleven races have been completed at the 2012 ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Dublin Bay, Ireland, and just one more remains.

The NZL Yachting Trust Youth Team excelled in the more settled wind and water conditions which were handed to them on this penultimate day of the event.

“We had two good starts today which laid the platform for our solid results” said Alex Munro who is sailing 29er with Trent Rippey (pictured above). They placed fifth and ninth in their two races.

“We had the best breeze and conditions today of the whole regatta and it was awesome” Alex continued.

In the men’s 420, Jayvee Buchanan and Matthew Morrison are saving some of their best results for last, yesterday finishing a race in 7th, and today a 9th in this extremely competitive class. Also in 420, Ellie Copeland and Erica Dawson are continuing their consistent results, performing very similar to how they did yesterday with a fifth place finish followed up by a tenth.

Today’s top result producers were Gemma Jones and Tomer Simhony in the SL 16, staying on pace with the lead pack and adding a fifth and fourth to their track record.

Andrew McKenzie carded another great first race today (fifth) but then was again one of more than ten competitors which received a black flag penalty in the second race for being over the start line too early.

The victors of the 29er and SL16 class have already been decided, as the lead boats have a considerable margin on the followers.

This annual week-long regatta is regarded as the pinnacle event of the global youth sailing calendar, and is a significant step for many into the Olympic class pathways. Past Notable NZ winners include Russell Coutts, Dean Barker and Stuart Bannantyne.
