The two NZL Sailing Team crews that achieved podium place finishes in the 2012 ISAF Sailing World Cup were last night presented their trophies in front of a packed staff room at Maersk Line New Zealand’s head office in the Britomart Transport Centre.
Paul Snow-Hansen and Jason Saunders have had a memorable year in the Men’s 470 class with solid results at ISAF Sailing World Cup Regattas in Melbourne, Palma, Medemblik and Weymouth. It was enough to see the young kiwis place second overall in this season’s ISAF Sailing World Cup – no mean feat given the intensity of competition during the months preceding the Olympic Games.
Snow-Hansen and Saunders represented New Zealand in August at the London Olympic Games punching well above their weight and impressing many to finish in fifth place in what was their Olympic debut.
Laser sailor Andy Maloney was the other NZL Sailing Team member to receive an ISAF Sailing World Cup Trophy with a third overall in the 2012 Series. No less than 289 of the world’s Laser campaigners competed in the single-handed class in at least one of the series regattas, also extremely competitive during the countdown period to the Olympic Games.
Maloney not only impressed in the Melbourne, Hyeres, Weymouth and Kiel World Cup events securing him the third place trophy, but the 22 year old also won his first Laser World Championship medal with a bronze in Boltenhagen, Germany in May this year.
The ISAF Sailing World Cup trophy presentation was made by YNZ Olympic Programme Manager, Jez Fanstone, with Saunders and Maloney on-site at a Maersk Line staff gathering together with Olympic gold medallists Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie.
Maersk Line is Yachting New Zealand’s official shipping partner supporting the NZL Sailing Team as the travel around the globe to compete against the world’s best.
