Over the winter months, Yachting New Zealand is facilitating seminars around the country to improve and maintain the quality of Judging, Umpiring and Race Management, and ensure Race Officials are kept educated and informed with what is an evolving discipline.
With new Racing Rules of Sailing coming into effect on 1st January 2017, these seminars are a great opportunity to become familiar with the changes and how they may affect you.
These seminars are free for all Yachting New Zealand affiliated Yacht Club members to attend.

Race Management Seminars:
Race Management Seminars are targeted at anyone interested in learning or improving the knowledge and skills required to undertake any of the on the water duties to run round the buoys type yacht races. Attending a race management seminar and passing the exam is a prerequisite to becoming qualified or revalidated as a Yachting New Zealand Club Race Officer or National Race Officer.
Race Management Seminar Schedule for 2016:

- 3rd and 4th September, Dunedin, Vauxhall Yacht Club
Race Officers' Conference
Saturday 10th September, Christchurch, Naval Point Club Lyttelton
The Race Officers Conference is a chance for accredited Club, National and International Race Officers to get together to discuss race management issues and promulgate best practice.
It is being held in Christchurch this year, for the first time.
It is open for all Yachting New Zealand Club and National Race officers and is a great chance to meet other race officers from around the country.
Due to feedback from previous Conferences, attendance at the Race Officers Conference is now an opportunity for National Race Officers to revalidate their qualification (See Race Officers Page on Yachting New Zealand website for Revalidation pathways).
NEW!!! Racing Rules Seminar (Level 1) - 1 day
These Seminars offer sailors, parents, coaches and beginners to judging an opportunity to become more familiar with the Racing Rules of Sailing, Judging processes and the roles of Judges. They will be facilitated by National and International Judges.
This is an opportunity to gain more in-depth knowledge about the rules (with a special emphasis on Part 2: When Boats Meet), understand any upcoming changes to the RRS (effective 1 Jan 2017) and to gain an insight at how judges interpret and apply the rules,
These seminars are a great opportunity to improve your sailing knowledge for your own sailing and racing benefit, or to learn more about the discipline of Judging and the role of Judges. People with experience across the range are equally catered for.
We will be running a number of these Racing Rules Seminars around the country. Schedule is still being confirmed, so keep a look out for it!!
National Judging Seminar (Level 2)
These seminars focus on the skills and practices of Judging and protest committees and include interactive exercises and mock protest hearings. These seminars are a prerequisite becoming qualified as a club or national judge.
National Judging Seminar Level 2 presumes knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing and of protest committee and judging procedures and practices. These are covered in the Racing Rules seminars (Level 1).

Judges Forum
Saturday 24th September, Auckland, Venue TBC
The Judges Forum is a chance for accredited Club, National and International Judges to get together to discuss Judging issues and promulgate best practice. The discussions will focus on upcoming changes to the Racing Rules of Sailing, as well as case studies of local and international judging outcomes.
It is open for all Yachting New Zealand Club and National Judges and is a great chance to meet other race officers from around the country. Attendance at the forum will be an opportunity to revalidate Club and National Judge Qualifications.
Match Racing Umpire Seminar
These seminars are suitable for anybody with a basic understanding of the rules and/or the game of Match Racing. The Seminar provides a great platform for attendees to learn the basic skills required to be able to umpire at local events, and is a step towards a Club Umpire Qualification.
The First day is focused primarily on the Rules and Appendix C of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Day 2 is much more focused on the practical components of umpiring.
